Frequently Asked Questions

How is Zakat calculated?

Add up your zakatable assets (cash, bank balances, gold, silver, business stock, money owed to you and investments), subtract debts that are due now, and if the total is at or above the Nisab after one lunar year, pay 2.5% of it.

What is the Nisab for Zakat?

The Nisab is the value of 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver Nisab for cash and mixed assets because it benefits more of the poor; others use gold.

Is Zakat due on gold jewellery?

Scholars differ. Some require Zakat on all gold and silver jewellery, while others exempt jewellery worn regularly. Paying on it is the more cautious position.

Is Zakat due on my house or car?

No. Items for personal use such as your home, car, furniture and clothes are not zakatable. Property or goods held for sale are.
