Discover the foundational beliefs and core practices that form the structure of a Muslim's daily life and worship.
The Foundation of Islamic Life
The Five Pillars of Islam are the core acts of worship that define the life of a Muslim. They are established in the famous Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) where he said: "Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving Zakat, making pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan."
Shahada (Declaration of Faith)
The fundamental creed of Islam. It is the sincere declaration that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is His final messenger.
"La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur rasulullah"
Entering Islam requires reciting and fully believing in this testimony.
Salah (Ritual Prayer)
Performing the five daily prayers at prescribed times: Fajr (Dawn), Dhuhr (Noon), Asr (Afternoon), Maghrib (Sunset), and Isha (Night). Salah connects the Muslim directly to Allah throughout the day.
Zakat (Obligatory Charity)
The annual giving of a portion (2.5%) of one's accumulated wealth and savings to the poor and needy. Zakat purifies one's wealth and fosters social solidarity within the community.
Mandatory on wealth exceeding the Nisab threshold.
Sawm (Fasting in Ramadan)
Abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations from dawn to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. Fasting teaches self-restraint, patience, gratitude, and empathy for the hungry.
Observed annually during the 9th month of the Hijri calendar.
Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah)
The pilgrimage to the Holy Kaabah in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. It is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able.
