Umrah Planning Checklist: Documents, Budget and Preparation
Umrah is a journey of a lifetime for many Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Umrah to Umrah is an expiation for what is between them, and an accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1773, Sahih Muslim 1349). Good preparation lets you focus on worship instead of worrying about logistics.
This checklist covers the practical side. For the rituals themselves, read our step-by-step guide on how to perform Umrah.
1. Documents and permits
- Passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, with blank pages.
- Visa: check the current Umrah or tourist visa options for your nationality. Rules change, so always confirm with official Saudi sources or a licensed agent.
- Permits: Umrah and visits to the Rawdah are booked through the official Nusuk platform; book your slots early.
- Vaccinations: confirm current health requirements (for example the meningitis vaccine) before you travel.
- Copies: keep digital and paper copies of your passport, visa, tickets, hotel bookings and insurance.
- Travel and health insurance covering your whole stay.
2. Budgeting your Umrah
The main costs are:
- Flights — the biggest variable; prices rise sharply in Ramadan and school holidays.
- Visa and service fees.
- Hotels in Makkah and Madinah — distance from the Haram makes a large difference.
- Transport between airports, Makkah and Madinah (bus, taxi or the Haramain high-speed train).
- Food, Zamzam bottles, gifts and personal spending.

3. When to go
- Ramadan: the Prophet ﷺ said Umrah in Ramadan is equal in reward to Hajj (Sahih al-Bukhari 1782, Sahih Muslim 1256) — but it is the busiest and most expensive time.
- Winter months: cooler weather, which is easier for elderly travellers and children.
- Off-peak periods: lower prices and smaller crowds.
4. Packing list
- Men: two sets of Ihram cloths, a belt or pouch, and unstitched sandals that leave the ankle and top of the foot uncovered.
- Women: comfortable, modest everyday clothing (there is no special Ihram garment for women), and comfortable shoes.
- Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant for use while in Ihram.
- A small prayer mat, a pocket Quran or dua book, and a reusable water bottle.
- Medicines, a basic first-aid kit, sunscreen, an umbrella and a power bank.
- A small backpack or shoe bag for the Haram.
5. Health and safety
- Walk regularly in the weeks before travelling — Tawaf and Sa’i involve several kilometres of walking.
- Drink plenty of water and Zamzam, and rest between acts of worship.
- Agree on a meeting point with your group in case you get separated.
- Keep your hotel’s name and address on your phone and on paper.
6. Spiritual preparation
- Learn the rituals in advance — the Ihram, Talbiyah, Tawaf, Sa’i and Halq or Taqsir — so you can perform them with confidence. See also our Hajj guide.
- Sincerely repent, settle debts where possible and seek forgiveness from people you have wronged.
- Prepare a list of duas for yourself, your family and the Ummah.
- Improve your recitation of the surahs and duas you will use — a few Tajweed classes before travelling make a real difference.
